That’s not me.

I have reason to use my middle initial whenever I write something. You would not think “Craig Wright” would be a common name, but we have:

Craig Wright, a respected economist in Canada.

Craig Wright, who until 1996 was a judge on the Ohio Supreme Court.

Craig Wright, a World Cup cricketer for Scotland.

But the really confusing part is that no less than five different “Craig Wrights” from my generations have written books, and as I have written a couple of them, I sometimes get confused with the others.

I am not the Craig Wright who writes children books.

I am not the Craig Wright who wrote a book on symbols in architecture even though we were both living in California when he wrote it.

I am not the Craig Wright who has written numerous books about music.

The one I really get mistaken for is the Craig Wright who is a prolific playwright and also writes for television. The reason for the confusion is that he is apparently a bit of a baseball fan and wrote a short comedy with a baseball theme titled “Foul Territory.” It seemed such an amazing coincidence to one person I met at the Winter Meetings that they refused to believe that I have never written a play.

On the darker side – and the real reason I did this “That’s not me” page – is that back in the late 1990s there was someone going around pretending to be me.

I first learned about him back around 1997 when I got a call from Rosie Gutierrez, the executive secretary for Dodgers GM Fred Claire, asking if that was me that had just called. She had just gotten a call from someone claiming to be me and asking to speak to Fred. Rosie and I had spoken numerous times, and she thought she knew my voice pretty well. She did not put the call through and instead told him Fred was not in, and then called me to check if that was somehow really me.

In warning other people about this, I also found out that STATS Inc had recently gotten a call from someone pretending to be me and trying to get some data sent to them.

There were couple other small oddities, but nothing as brazen, and I had pretty much forgotten about him when a year or so later it was brought to my attention that someone pretending to me had been in some baseball chat groups behaving like an ass. A guy who dealt with him told me how he would “… insult other posters, lord his knowledge over them, and call them stupid or question the quality of their education … and I think his parting shot had to do with the group and their collective IQs.”

To anyone who bumped heads with him, I’m sorry he abused you, and I assure you that was not me. It appears he’s long ago given up this game, but if you come across something suspicious, you can reach me through the Contact Us page to check it out.
